Isla May
Junior Lyrical
Meet Isla-May! Isla-May is 10 years old and has been dancing for the past 8 years. Isla-May used to dance at Mary Flynn Murphy and is currently dancing at Studio 28. She has been dancing since she was 2 and competing since I was 6. She is going to a new dance studio this year and is part of their elite competition team. She also just had her third year dancing with Tony Williams’s Urban Nutcracker and BCYB company. Isla-May is also a part of (season 6 of SYTYCD winner) Russell Ferguson’s krump crew - she’s the only kid on it! Isla-May recently won a battle where she got to represent the east coast Krump in the national finals. Isla-May’s favorite styles of dance are tumbling, acro, krump, and tap.
When we asked Isla-May what she loves most about dance, she told us that she loves how your body reacts to the music but also how there are so many styles that can go with so many different styles of music. She loves all the different moves you can come up with when you are dancing. Dance makes Isla-May feel alive because it makes her feel like an extension of the art that happens with the music that was made - like someone wrote down these words and made this tune and she gets to act it out. It inspires her.
Isla-May’s favorite part of the Alive event she attended was just having fun and being able to show off what she can do and what she’s good at. It was so fun doing all of the different styles and learning the choreography. Isla-May is most excited to be an ambassador and help the instructors teach.
Fun fact - Isla-May does dance battles with adults! She has won some of them as well! During the battles, she’s usually the only kid around. After she saw the Rockettes at Christmas time, Isla-May decided that she wants to dance in New York.
